Introducing Mark Dery

Mark Dery is a cultural critic. He is the author of the Open Magazine 'Culture Jamming: Hacking, Slashing and Sniping in the Empire of Science'; the editor of Duke University Press Essay Collection 'Flame Wars: The Discourse of Cyberculture'; and the author of the forthcoming critic of fringe computer culture 'Escape Velocity: Cyberculture at the End of the Century'.

In his recent work Mark Dery is developing a critique on the fringe computer culture. He summarized it for us as 'a blistering rebuttle of the theology of the rejector seat'. He forcefully opposes the widespread believe that technology will catapult us happily into the next millenium.

On fridaymorning Mark will speak in the opening program of the Next 5 Minutes (in De Balie at 10:30). The title of his presentation is 'Unnatural Histories'. He will adress and critisize the technoliberal myth of online, disembodied cyberlifestyles.
