Introducing Vakuum TV
Vakuum TV from Budapest is a VERY independent tv station, even independent from
tv sets. Vakuum TV doesn't broadcast, they do live performances in a tv format.
This is due to the extreem difficulties one meets when making a program for the
Hungary public channels. Vakuum TV has decided not to go into that struggle.
They do live performances of the programs they would otherwise have broadcasted.
On the stage they use a large tv set, made of a wooden frame and a
thin sheet of textile. The actors are performing behind the screen.
Usually the audience participates in the shows too. In this sense
Vakuum TV is doing 'interactive tv' and therefor way beyond the
situation of the existing official Hungarian channels.
Vakuum TV was founded two years ago as a reaction to the changing political
climate in Hungary. In 1993 the government forced a coup, under the excuse of
liberalisation, and since 'cleansed' a lot of institutions. Most progressive
employees of the tv and radio stations were fired, for instance.
The performances of Vakuum TV are not stricktly politically
orientated. They may react on anything that is happening in the
environments of its members. But since social and cultural
circumstances are very much entangled with politics, it does feed
into a lot of the sketches. And, it gives rise to a lot of fun and
parody!
Until recently Vakuum TV performed every mondaynight at the 'Tilos Osz A' Cafe,
a famous spot for the young and the queer in Budapest. For 6 years this has been
a popular gathering place, but unfortunately it has been closed down by the
local government. So now Vakuum TV is looking for a new place to perform. They
believe there will always be an other location where the alternative scene can
do it's things.
The members of Vakuum TV are: Laszlo Kistamas, Attila Till, Kristof Kovacs, Dora
Csernatony, Kristof Forgacs, Geza Fekete and Gyulya Gulyas. They have all come
to Amsterdam for the Next 5 Minutes. On the picture with this text you can see
the first three members mentioned above:
