Vuk Cosic from Ljubljana, Slovenia:
The Californian Story is not interesting for Ljubljana because the level of social interaction our daily life is fairly high. We do not need the Net to meet one another. We started two media cafes in Ljubljana to make people sensible for digital communication. But in the cafes you will find also magazines and books that are hard to get. In each cafe are four terminals with free access to the Net (paying are the Soros Foundation and the student organization of the Universe). Both media cafes were set up in existing subcultural cafes. This is why we were faster than the establishment. Now it is no longer sexy to go digital, we are waiting for big bizz to jump in. We also have a magazine; "Very Cyber Indeed - about Net and Humans." The minus 1 issue has been released, with the zero issue coming up (we started with minus 2). It is connected to the Nettime mailing list (see elsewhere on this site - BR), and is part of the N5M context. Articles can be one hundred words max, we have to confront the info-overload. The short travel time of messages nowadays did not shorten the time we need to process information. If you are hit by 5 Gigabits a day you DIE! You can send your contribution to vci@kud-fp.si, but it is impossible to become their foreign correspondent since there is no abroad states VCI. Bas Raijmakers (bas@ACSi.nl) |
