M. 1999Satellite Workshop for the N5M3MauzZ and Raul Marroquin, two visual artists working with electronic mediain the Netherlands have been asked by the organizers of the N5m3 (Next FiveMinutes, a conference on tactical media) to put together a workshop on thetactical use of communication satellites. MauzZ and Marroquin were laterjoined by Italian Communications Graduate Zoe D'amaro who is now thecoordinator of the project.The WorkshopUps and Downs Communication Satelites and Tactical Media(Veritas & Fantasy)The satellite workshop can be described as one of the N5M "classics"because it has been a permanent feature of the event since it was firstproduced in 1993.Ups and DownsIn the N5M3 (the Third edition of the event) D'amaro, MauzZ and Marroquinaim to cover all the "ups" and "downs" in the relationship betweencommunication satellites throughout their long history and tacticalcommunications, culture, and activism. The idea is to touch of all anglesregarding the use and influence of communication  satellites in these areasand changes that can be expected in the next Millennium because oftechnological improvements, price decrease in satellites manufacturing andlaunching as well as the world's new geopolitical configuration, etc.>From artists experiments, achievements and failures, to political activism,to abandoned Russian satellites lost in space, television satellites as thecompetitors of cable television, authorship, © and the intellectualproperty of telecasted material, satellites and the net: wide band internetvia the satellite and some other pressing issues, the use of "appropriated"information in a context different that the ones that they are meant for,the role of communication satellite in the last decade of the Millennium,etc.The participantsPeople from different disciplines have been invited to participateincluding veteran media activist DeDe Hallec from Paper Tiger - Deep DishTelevision in New York now in San Francisco, Diederik Bangert Editor inChief Europe by Satellite, Dr Dish German satellite specialist/journalist,Vicki Gray for A2000 (Amsterdam's cable operator) Michael Hegener(Nrc/Iicd) Robert van Boeschoten(Mcluhan program) Marko Peljhan (Ljudmila/insular technologies) JedRosenzweig, New York artist and media activist working with stellite feeds,Rens Maas, Director of TSS-Telecom, Satellite equipement importer, andoperator of an European-wide amateur Satellite TV channel fromHeerhugowaard (the Netherlands) Danny Puchen, satelite & televison dealerin Amsterdam with a presentation on the use of satelite dishes amongmembers of etnich minorities and as the main competitor of cabletelevision.Some of the confirmed participants will be present during the event someother will participate on-line and via teleconferencing.The exact date of the event will be released latterMore available information, contributions and suggestions? please ask / send to:Zoe D'amaro                   =============O============
