Emer Beamer

Biography

Emer Beamer is an educator, designer and activist who studied economics at University College Dublin and theater/graphic design at the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam. The aim of these studies was to understand how money drives forces in our world and to research creating (meaningful) experiences for people. She has had many jobs, ranging from ice cream factory worker, financial anaylst, web designer, teacher, fundraiser, and online education designer. He is Co-initiator of the Nairobits project, developed the concept, the website and the vision. In Nairobi she focused on the web design training of the youth. Emer is continually researching and gaining knowledge from fields such as interaction design, child pyschology, development politics, African reality and performance art to inform her approach. Emer co-initiated the Nairobits project in 2000, a media channel and web design school in Nairobi, Kenya, www.nairobits.com and developed the outline for the e-learning curriculum www.nairobits.com/e-learning. As part of the Butterfly Works collective she co-developed 'the World starts with Me' an online curriculum in sex education, AIDS prevention and creative computer skills for young Ugandans.
