BORDERPANIC UPDATE |
By Zina Kaye + Deborah Kelly |

The BORDERPANIC event has increased in size quite a lot, which indicates the remarkable amount of energy that people want to dedicate to issues around borders and immigration.

We've recruited regional representatives who are points of exchange and are coming to give a summary of their local projects at the tactical media lab. In terms of mediated media - we have made a radio ad that can be heard from : http://laudanum.net/spbrd/borderpanic.wav We're distributing it to the local and national radio stations, whom are likely to pick up the ad as a story. We are also running a postcard competition to get a wide audience in touch with the issues. We came to an early conclusion, that we wanted to reach the Australian main-stream psyche. We hope that the postcard competition will facilitate this. We've been following the lives of several detainees in Villawood - a detention centre in the suburbs of Sydney. In particular the Al Abaddy family. They are showing work in the show and it has been good to communicate with them about something they are producing and have control over and are getting paid for. They have recently been refused temporary protection visas so friday is possibly the last time we will see them. Other than that, it's a few days before we start installing all the contributions from artists, activists and players into the Performance Space. The publicity machine is panting madly. Wish you were all here ! Zina & Deborah |
