The travelling painters in Yugoslavia |

This autumn, visual artists Ren? Klarenbeek (NL) and Dagmar Drews (D) are driving from The Hague to Belgrade, making public billboard art on the way. The concept is simple: a billboard truck, some buckets of paint and brushes, and a continuous conversation with passers-by. The result will be a daily-growing sequence of images telling the personal stories of the individuals en-countered. Each image, after being carefully documented on www.painter.nl, will be painted over and replaced with the next. The European Cultural Foundation is the main sponsor of the project together with HIVOS.

In September the Amsterdam media festival Next 5 Minutes organizes a Tactical Media Lab. This open platform for artists and media-makers will consider who has a voice in the contemporary media landscape, and which voices are left out. The Lab offers an ideal opportunity for the R.O.O.M. to discuss Ren? and Dagmar's project and the possibilities of billboard art. As a starting point for this R.O.O.M., Arjen Berkvens, programme manager of the Alfred Mozer Foundation, will interview Ren? and find out what happened in the Bosnian town of Tuzla on that particular day. The work created will be projected on-screen. The general discussion that follows could explore such issues as: The billboard project as an artistic concept; Questions for the team to ask people on the ground; Personal engagement; Artists as catalysts; Taboos in art. The conversation will be broadcast live on the Internet and the results published on the web journal of the Tactical Media Lab. Tuesday 17 September 18.00-20.00 hrs. |
